Welcome to the :HELM by Helm Innovations AB. This advanced fishing reel is designed specifically for sailboat integration, offering reliability and performance for offshore fishing enthusiasts. The :HELM combines durability with cutting-edge technology, ensuring seamless operation even in challenging maritime conditions. Whether you’re fishing for tuna or other large game fish, the :HELM is your reliable partner. To ensure safe and optimal use, please carefully read this guide before operating your :HELM reel.
-
Safe HandlingAlways ensure your hands are dry and free of debris when handling the reel. Maintain a stable posture when operating the reel. Keep your feet firmly planted on a secure surface to prevent slipping or loss of balance. When handling heavy catches, use gloves to prevent line cuts or abrasions.
-
Proper InstallationThe :HELM reel must be securely mounted to the designated fixture on your sailboat. Verify all attachments are tightened and stable before use. Never use the reel if it is loosely attached or if the mounting hardware shows signs of wear or damage. Ensure that the installation location is easily accessible during operation and does not obstruct other onboard activities.

Operating PrecautionsThe :HELM reel must be securely mounted to the designated fixture on your sailboat. Verify all attachments are tightened and stable before use. Never use the reel if it is loosely attached or if the mounting hardware shows signs of wear or damage. Ensure that the installation location is easily accessible during operation and does not obstruct other onboard activities.
-
Supervision of UseChildren should only use the reel under adult supervision. Ensure they understand the proper handling and safety measures. Demonstrate safe practices before allowing others to use the reel, especially first-time users.
-
Environmental SafetyDo not leave the reel unattended in extreme weather conditions. Prolonged exposure to saltwater and sun can reduce its lifespan. Always clean and dry the reel after use to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth operation. Store the reel in a protective case when not in use to shield it from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.

Transom requirementsThe :HELM fishing reel is designed to be mounted on the pushpit at the transom of the vessel. Suitable pipe diameters range from 22 to 30 mm for secure attachment. Additionally, the reel can be mounted on a flat surface using a standard M8 bolt (not included with the product). Ensure that the chosen mounting location provides easy access for operation and maintenance, and verify that the surface or pushpit is sturdy enough to handle the forces during fishing activities. To ensure a better experience, it is recommended to align the :HELM with the center axis of the vessel. There are two variants available for purchase: Straight variant – no angle offset Angled variant – 10-degree offset

Mounting step-by-stepSTEP 1 Before mounting, attach the fairlead to the reel. It can be installed in either of two positions, depending on whether the reel is intended for left- or right-hand use. Once the preferred position is selected, secure the fairlead using the 4 countersunk M6 bolts. Use an Allen Key to tighten the bolts to a torque of 4Nm. Then, gently wiggle the fairlead and re-tighten the bolts to 8Nm. Verify that the fairlead is securely attached. If necessary, repeat the tightening process to ensure proper attachment. STEP 2 Mount the reel in your preferred location on the transom, ensuring there is adequate space for adjusting the drag and engaging or disengaging the autocatch. It is recommended that two people handle the mounting — best practice is to point the :HELM straight up and mount the M8 U-bolts, nylon washers, and hex nuts. Use a wrench with a 13mm size, tighten only until the reel is staying leveled, excessive force will bend the holder. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN The horizontal leveling impacts if your reel mostly spools the line in the center or spreads it out. Depending if you sail in coastal or offshore a different adjustment may be better.

Basic operationsThe :HELM drag package is engineered to be stronger than the supplied fishing line. In case of an emergency, fully tightening the Drag Knob will allow the user to break the line safely and efficiently. Warning: Be aware that when the fishing line breaks, it can backlash. Always exercise caution and ensure a safe distance to avoid injury. Releasing the lure Begin by releasing the line through a controlled counterclockwise turn of the Drag Knob (1). Manually pull out the first meter of line, allowing the fishing lure to enter the water. The natural drag from the water will facilitate the automatic release of additional line as the boat moves forward. Once the fishing lure has reached the desired distance behind the vessel, gradually tighten the Drag Knob (1) by turning it clockwise. This will secure the line and stop further release, ensuring that the line is held firmly in place and ready for fishing operations. Retrieving the Lure Before reeling in the lure or catch, ensure that the AutoDrag slider is in the disengaged position. Close the Drag Knob (1) by turning it clockwise to gradually increase the drag force, providing controlled resistance during retrieval. Identify the correct end of the endless line system to initiate the furling mechanism. Begin pulling the selected end and ensure that the entire reel rotates smoothly to pull in the lure or catch. If the alert ratchet sounds during this process, it indicates that the Drag Knob is not tightened sufficiently. Adjust the Drag Knob further clockwise

Advanced Functionalities and FeaturesThe :HELM fishing reel is equipped with advanced features to enhance offshore fishing while sailing. Below is a detailed explanation of the Autodrag function and its usage. How to Use the Autodrag System The Autodrag Slider (2) has two positions: engaged (forward) and disengaged (back). When the Autodrag Slider (2) is in the engaged position, the Autodrag Cog (3) on the main reel, gradually turns the Drag Knob (1) clockwise with each rotation. This action progressively increases the drag force up to approximately 20kg, allowing for smooth and more controlled increase of drag without manually operating the reel. ATTENTION: If Autodrag is engaged and the furler system is used it will have the opposite effect. So it’s important to disengage Autodrag before starting to retrieve
-
Regular MaintenanceRinse the reel with fresh water after every use to remove salt and debris. Use a soft cloth to dry it thoroughly. Periodically check all moving parts for smooth operation. Apply a light lubricant to the reel mechanism as needed. Clean the line guides to ensure they remain free of obstructions that could cause uneven line movement.
-
Inspection and ReplacementInspect the mounting system and fasteners regularly to ensure they remain secure and free from corrosion. Replace the line if it shows fraying, nicks, or other signs of wear. Check the drag system periodically to ensure it’s functioning correctly and provides consistent resistance.
-
Long-term StorageBefore storing the reel for an extended period, ensure all components are clean and dry. Apply a protective coating to metal parts to prevent rust. Store the reel in a dry, cool location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
